What Is Green Lipped Mussel?
The green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) is a species of mollusc native to New Zealand. As the common name implies, these mussels have a characteristic green colour around the opening (lip) of the mussel.
This species of mussel is well-respected as a superfood and nutritional powerhouse. They contain some of the highest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids in the world and offer a rich source of trace minerals such as zinc, selenium, and iodine.
Green-lipped mussels are also one of the only sources of ETA (eicosatetraenoic acid), which is a particularly potent form of omega-3 fatty acid. ETA and other omega-3 fatty acid sources, such as fish oil, are commonly used to support joint health, pain and inflammation, the production of hormones, and hair, skin and nail health.
Green-lipped mussels are a popular supplement for both humans and dogs to help prevent joint degeneration and decrease the pain and inflammation underlying chronic joint disease.
The Main Benefits of Green Lipped Mussel Include:
• Inhibits key inflammatory enzymes
• Supports heart health
• Eases pain and inflammation of the joints
• May boost the immune system by supporting the production of immune cells
• Boosts cognitive function
• Improves hair, skin, and nail health
The Science Behind Green Lipped Mussel
Green-lipped mussels have the same applications as fish oils, and are popular for all the same reasons — with one main difference;
The source of omega-3 in green-lipped mussels comes in the form of eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA). This compound is thought to provide an even greater anti-inflammatory impact than the form of omega-3 fatty acids found in conventional fish oil supplements.
Omega-3 fatty acids serve as the opposing force to molecules in the body tasked with increasing inflammation. Once damage occurs in the body, inflammatory messengers produced from omega-6 fatty acids trigger the inflammatory process. This brings blood flow to the area, along with immune cells and fresh oxygen. Once the area is repaired, anti-inflammatory compounds produced from omega-3 fatty acids reverse the process and bring inflammation to a halt.
However, if key precursor molecules, such as omega-3 fatty acids, are missing, the inflammatory process doesn’t shut-off — leading to long-term, chronic inflammation and degeneration of the tissue. This degenerative damage often happens in high-stress areas like the joints.
Omega-3-rich supplements like green-lipped mussels ensure the body has access to the precursors it needs to shut down inflammation when it’s no longer needed.
2. Nutritional Support
In addition to omega-3, green-lipped mussels provide a variety of vitamins (especially vitamin A and B12), trace minerals (including zinc and selenium), and amino acids.
These nutritional components are essential for individual aspects of our health. For example, zinc is a key co-factor for immune and male reproductive health, while selenium is critical for healthy metabolic health. Vitamin B12 (often lacking in vegan diets) is required for neurotransmitter production, blood production, and methylation.
Is Green Lipped Mussel The Supplement For Me?
The ideal ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids is 4:1 or less — some evidence even suggests this ratio should be 2:1 or 1:1. However, the Western diet has a ratio between 10:1 and 50:1 — which increases the prevalence of chronic inflammation, pain, and degenerative joint disorders.
While just about anybody eating a Western diet today can benefit directly from green-lipped mussel extract, there are certain groups of people that have the most to benefit from this important superfood.
Green-lipped mussels are most commonly used by people and pets suffering from chronic joint pain or inflammation.
Other common uses of this supplement are for supporting the immune system, promoting the male reproductive health and virility, and encouraging healthy hair, skin, and nail growth.
