What Is Inositol, Folate & Chromium?
1. Inositol
Inositol is an essential intermediary compound for a variety of different hormones and neurotransmitters. It’s commonly used to boost mood by supporting optimal serotonin and dopamine levels.
Other common uses of inositol is to promote fertility, regulate blood sugar levels, and promote thyroid function and metabolism (increasing energy levels and supporting weight loss).
2. Folate
Folate (AKA vitamin B9) has many important effects on the body. One of the primary functions of this vitamin is to construct new RNA and DNA in our cells.
More recently, folate was shown to offer cholesterol and blood-sugar regulating benefits especially when taken in combination with inositol.
Folate is also important during pregnancy to support the formation of the central nervous system in the growing fetus. It’s one of the main vitamins given to newly pregnant mothers to prevent developmental complications.
3. Chromium
Chromium is a trace mineral derived from our diet. It’s used as the starting material to create a compound known as chromodulin.
Chromodulin is necessary for insulin — the blood-sugar hormone — to do its job effectively. Insulin is responsible for moving sugar molecules in the blood to the inside of cells where it can be broken down and used for energy. If insulin isn’t working efficiently, blood sugar levels begin to rise, while sugar levels inside the cells drop off. This results in food cravings, low-energy, and irritability. If this goes on for too long, high blood sugar levels can lead to more severe complications.
Chromium supports the effects of insulin to ensure the balance of sugar inside the cells and in the blood remain at healthy levels.
The Science Behind Inositol, Folate & Chromium
All three of these compounds were carefully formulated for their effects on symptoms related to high blood sugar, low-fertility, metabolic imbalance, and hormone dysfunction.
Inositol is the primary ingredient — serving as an intermediary agent for over a dozen neurotransmitters and hormones throughout the body. Folate and chromium are added for their synergistic effects on blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides, and natural fertility.
1. Metabolism & Weight Loss
Our metabolic system is incredibly complex. There are a lot of different problems that can arise when the metabolic balance isn’t just right. High blood sugar, fatigue, weight gain, irritability, and high cholesterol are all common side effects of dysfunctional metabolism.
Inositol and folate supplements are often taken together for their combined effects on reducing triglyceride levels and restoring optimal LDL and HDL levels.
Inositol also affects TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) — which controls the activity of the thyroid gland. This gland is the primary regulator of metabolism and energy production. If thyroid activity is low, metabolism may decrease, leading to excess weight gain and low energy levels.
Chromium is also added to this formula for its effects on blood sugar control. It works by supporting the role of insulin, which is necessary for keeping sugar metabolism in check. If insulin doesn’t work effectively it can lead to low energy and weight gain over time.
2. Natural Fertility
Inositol and folate have been shown to reduce the sensitivity of the ovaries to FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) — which triggers the release of an egg and the initiation of the female reproductive cycle.
Several neurotransmitters are also important for regulating the menstrual cycle — including serotonin and dopamine. Inositol serves as a regulator for both these neurotransmitters — which may offer an indirect benefit on female reproductive health.
Folate also offers fertility-enhancing benefits. It’s used in the production of DNA and RNA, which is necessary to sustain the rapidly developing infant brain and nervous system during the first trimester of pregnancy.
